Our Services

The Stevenson Laboratory is IANZ accredited for tests covered by NZS4402, NZS4407, NZS3112, AS/NZ4456 and various other international standards, such as ASTM (US) and BSEN (British/European).

Our laboratory is also a MAF approved Operator of a Transitional Facility, enabling us to receive soil samples from overseas.

The General Manager of Stevenson Laboratories is Jayden Ellis - a founding member of the CETANZ committee (Civil Engineering Testing Association of New Zealand) and also sits on the Technical Group as leader of CETANZ. For a full list of accredited tests visit www.ianz.govt.nz or contact our Laboratory Manager.

Soil testing

Types of Tests We Provide

Aggregates testing

Testing for quality control and evaluation of natural and processed materials for use in roading and concrete aggregates include:

  • Sampling
  • Production properties – particle size distribution, sand equivalent, clay index, plasticity index
  • Source properties – weathering quality index, CBR (California Bearing Ratio), crushing resistance
  • Size and shape
  • Compaction data – maximum dry density, solid density
  • Density and absorption, voids
  • Permeability
  • Soundness
  • Modified aggregate testing

Research and development

  • Product development

Concrete, paving and masonry products testing

The laboratory includes a wide range of testing equipment to suit a broad range of masonry, paving and concrete products.

Physical and mechanical testing of fresh and hardened products includes:

  • On-site sampling and testing of fresh and hardened concrete
  • Plant compliance - determination of density/compression/flexural strengths
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Dimensional tolerance
  • Flexural strength
  • In-situ strength
  • Equipment checks

Soils testing

Soil testing at our Laboratory provides a variety of results to suit applications such as roading, earthworks and retaining walls. Testing includes:

  • Soil investigation
  • Compaction data – maximum dry density, solid density
  • Soil characterisation – linear shrinkage, plasticity index
  • Particle size distribution – hydrometer
  • CBR, unconfined compressive strength
  • Soil/aggregate stabilisation/modification testing
  • Compaction monitoring on-site nuclear and tube densities
  • Scala penetrometer and shear strength
  • Unconfined compression strength test (UCS)
